21 And ^sthe Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.

25 And he ^dcried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log,¹ and he ^ethrew it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord² made for them a statute and a rule, and there he ^ftested them,

4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain ^obread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may ^ptest them, whether they will walk in my law or not.

31 Now the house of Israel called its name ^pmanna. It was ^qlike coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”

35 The people of Israel ^tate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till ^uthey came to the border of the land of Canaan.

5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with ^bwhich you struck the Nile, and go. 6 ^cBehold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.

9 When Moses entered the tent, the ^cpillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord¹ would speak with Moses. 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door.

The Shining Face of Moses

29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with ^uthe two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face ^vshone because he had been talking with God.¹ 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face ^wshone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he ^xcommanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a ^yveil over his face.

34 Whenever Moses ^zwent in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35 the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was ^ashining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

36 Throughout all their journeys, ⁿwhenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out. 37 But ^oif the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.

2 ^h“Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers’ house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers’ houses, twelve staffs. Write each man’s name on his staff, 3 and write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each fathers’ house. 4 Then you shall deposit them in the tent of meeting before the testimony, ⁱwhere I meet with you. 5 And the staff of the man ^jwhom I choose shall sprout. Thus I will make to cease from me ^kthe grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.”

8 On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds. 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the people of Israel. And they looked, and each man took his staff. 10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Put back ^mthe staff of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept ⁿas a sign for the rebels, ^othat you may make an end of their grumblings against me, lest they die.”
