ESV — Daily Light on the Daily Path: Day 192
192
Morning
Matt. 10:24; John 13:13; Matt. 10:25; John 15:20; John 17:14; Heb. 12:3, 4; Heb. 12:1, 2; 1 Pet. 4:1

“A disciple is not above his teacher.”

“You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.”

“It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master.”—“If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.”—“I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.”

Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.—Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking.

Evening
Prov. 23:26; Deut. 5:29; Acts 8:21; Rom. 8:7, 8; 2 Cor. 8:5; 2 Chron. 31:21; Prov. 4:23; Col. 3:23; Eph. 6:6, 7; Ps. 119:32

My son, give me your heart.

“Oh that they had such a mind as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!”

“Your heart is not right before God.”—For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

They gave themselves first to the Lord.—And every work that [Hezekiah] undertook,… seeking his God, he did with all his heart, and prospered.

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life…. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord.—As servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man.

I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!

24 f“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant1 above his master.

Footnotes

13 jYou call me kTeacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.

25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. gIf they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign1 those of his household.

Footnotes

[1] 10:25 Greek lacks will they malign

20 Remember the word that I said to you: g‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, hthey will also persecute you. iIf they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

14 cI have given them your word, and dthe world has hated them ebecause they are not of the world, fjust as I am not of the world.

Do Not Grow Weary

dConsider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or efainthearted.

In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

Jesus, Founder and Perfecter of Our Faith

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and wsin which clings so closely, and xlet us run ywith endurance the race that is zset before us,

looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, awho for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising bthe shame, and cis seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Stewards of God's Grace

Since therefore zChrist suffered in the flesh,1 aarm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for bwhoever has suffered in the flesh chas ceased from sin,

21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for gyour heart is not right before God.

For the mind that is set on the flesh is vhostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; windeed, it cannot.

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

and this, not as we expected, but they mgave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.

21 And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandments, seeking his God, he did with all his heart, and prospered.

23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,

for ofrom it flow pthe springs of life.

23 yWhatever you do, work heartily, zas for the Lord and not for men,

not by the way of eye-service, as ypeople-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,

rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man,

32 I will run in the way of your commandments

when you fenlarge my heart!1
