Last Epiphany

First Psalm: Psalm 95; Psalm 31

Psalm 95 (Listen)

Let Us Sing Songs of Praise

95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;

let us fmake a joyful noise to gthe rock of our salvation!

Let us hcome into his presence with thanksgiving;

let us fmake a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

For the Lord is ia great God,

and a great King jabove all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth;

the heights of the mountains are his also.

The sea is his, for khe made it,

and his hands formed kthe dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

let us lkneel before the Lord, our mMaker!

For he is our nGod,

and we are the people of his opasture,

and the sheep of his hand.

pToday, if you qhear his voice,

rdo not harden your hearts, as at sMeribah,

as on the day at tMassah in the wilderness,

when your fathers put me to the utest

and put me to the proof, though they had seen my vwork.

10 wFor forty years I loathed that generation

and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,

and they have not known xmy ways.”

11 Therefore I yswore in my wrath,

“They shall not enter zmy rest.”

Psalm 31 (Listen)

Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

31 oIn you, O Lord, do I ptake refuge;

qlet me never be put to shame;

in your rrighteousness deliver me!

Incline your ear to me;

rescue me speedily!

Be sa rock of trefuge for me,

a strong fortress to save me!

For you are my rock and my fortress;

and for your uname's sake you lead me and guide me;

you vtake me out of wthe net they have hidden for me,

for you are my xrefuge.

yInto your hand I commit my spirit;

you have redeemed me, O Lord, zfaithful God.

I ahate1 those who pay bregard to worthless cidols,

but I trust in the Lord.

I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,

because you have seen my affliction;

you have dknown the distress of my soul,

and you have not edelivered me into the hand of the enemy;

you have set my feet in fa broad place.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am gin distress;

hmy eye is wasted from grief;

my soul and my body also.

10 For my life is spent with sorrow,

and my years with sighing;

my strength fails because of my iniquity,

and imy bones waste away.

11 Because of all my adversaries I have become ja reproach,

especially to my kneighbors,

and an object of dread to my acquaintances;

those who see me in the street lflee from me.

12 I have been mforgotten like one who is dead;

I have become like na broken vessel.

13 For I ohear the whispering of many—

terror on every side!—

pas they scheme together against me,

as they plot to take my life.

14 But I qtrust in you, O Lord;

I say, “You are my God.”

15 My rtimes are in your hand;

srescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!

16 tMake your face shine on your servant;

save me in your steadfast love!

17 O Lord, ulet me not be put to shame,

for I call upon you;

let the wicked be put to shame;

let them go vsilently to Sheol.

18 Let the lying lips be mute,

which wspeak xinsolently against the righteous

in pride and contempt.

19 Oh, how abundant is your goodness,

which you have stored up for those who fear you

and worked for those who take refuge in you,

yin the sight of the children of mankind!

20 In zthe cover of your presence you hide them

from the plots of men;

you astore them in your shelter

from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord,

for he has wondrously bshown his steadfast love to me

when I was in ca besieged city.

22 I had said in my dalarm,2

“I am ecut off from fyour sight.”

But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy

when I cried to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all you his gsaints!

The Lord preserves the faithful

but abundantly hrepays the one who acts in pride.

24 iBe strong, and let your heart take courage,

all you who wait for the Lord!

Second Psalm: Psalm 35

Psalm 35 (Listen)

Great Is the Lord

Of David.

35 Contend, O Lord, with those who ycontend with me;

zfight against those who fight against me!

Take hold of ashield and buckler

and rise for my help!

Draw the spear and javelin1

against my pursuers!

Say to my soul,

“I am your salvation!”

bLet them be cput to shame and dishonor

who seek after my life!

Let them be dturned back and disappointed

who devise evil against me!

Let them be like echaff before the wind,

with the angel of the Lord driving them away!

Let their way be dark and fslippery,

with the angel of the Lord pursuing them!

For gwithout cause hthey hid their net for me;

without cause they dug ia pit for my life.2

Let jdestruction come upon him kwhen he does not know it!

And let the net that he hid ensnare him;

let him fall into it—to his destruction!

Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord,

lexulting in his salvation.

10 All my mbones shall say,

“O Lord, nwho is like you,

delivering the poor

from him who is too strong for him,

the poor and needy from him who robs him?”

11 oMalicious3 witnesses rise up;

they ask me of things that I do not know.

12 pThey repay me evil for good;

my soul is bereft.4

13 But I, qwhen they were sick—

I rwore sackcloth;

I safflicted myself with fasting;

I prayed twith head bowed5 on my chest.

14 I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother;

as one who laments his mother,

I ubowed down in mourning.

15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered;

they gathered together against me;

vwretches whom I did not know

tore at me without ceasing;

16 like profane mockers at a feast,6

they wgnash at me with their teeth.

17 How long, O Lord, will you xlook on?

Rescue me from their destruction,

ymy precious life from the lions!

18 I will thank you in zthe great congregation;

in the mighty throng I will praise you.

19 aLet not those rejoice over me

who are bwrongfully my foes,

and let not those cwink the eye

who dhate me ewithout cause.

20 For they do not speak peace,

but against those who are quiet in the land

they devise words of deceit.

21 They fopen wide their mouths against me;

they say, g“Aha, Aha!

Our eyes have seen it!”

22 hYou have seen, O Lord; ibe not silent!

O Lord, jbe not far from me!

23 Awake and krouse yourself for lmy vindication,

for my cause, my God and my Lord!

24 mVindicate me, O Lord, my God,

according to your righteousness,

and nlet them not rejoice over me!

25 Let them not say in their hearts,

o“Aha, our heart's desire!”

Let them not say, p“We have swallowed him up.”

26 Let them be qput to shame and disappointed altogether

who rejoice at my calamity!

Let them be rclothed with shame and dishonor

who smagnify themselves against me!

27 Let those who delight in my righteousness

shout for joy and be glad

tand say evermore,

u“Great is the Lord,

who vdelights in the welfare of his servant!”

28 Then my wtongue shall tell of your righteousness

and of your praise all the day long.

The Soul Who Sins Shall Die

18 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you1 mean sby repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, t‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge’? uAs I live, declares the Lord God, vthis proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: wthe soul who sins shall die.

Ezekiel 18:25-32 (Listen)

25 o“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? 26 lWhen a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. 27 Again, pwhen a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. 28 Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29 Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

30 “Therefore qI will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord God. rRepent and turn from all your transgressions, slest iniquity be your ruin.1 31 tCast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and umake yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! vWhy will you die, O house of Israel? 32 wFor I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; rso turn, and live.”

Exhortation, Encouragement, and Prayer

I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to nagree in the Lord. Yes, I ask you also, true companion,2 help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, owhose names are in the book of life.

pRejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. qThe Lord is at hand; rdo not be anxious about anything, sbut in everything by prayer and supplication twith thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And uthe peace of God, vwhich surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and wreceived and heard and seen xin me—practice these things, and ythe God of peace will be with you.

Gospel: John 17:9-19

John 17:9-19 (Listen)

I am praying for them. jI am not praying for the world but for those kwhom you have given me, for lthey are yours. 10 mAll mine are yours, and yours are mine, and nI am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but othey are in the world, and pI am coming to you. qHoly Father, rkeep them in your name, swhich you have given me, tthat they may be one, ueven as we are one. 12 vWhile I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have wguarded them, and xnot one of them has been lost except ythe son of destruction, zthat the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now aI am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have bmy joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 cI have given them your word, and dthe world has hated them ebecause they are not of the world, fjust as I am not of the world. 15 I gdo not ask that you htake them out of the world, but that you ikeep them from jthe evil one.1 16 kThey are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 lSanctify them2 in the truth; myour word is truth. 18 nAs you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And ofor their sake pI consecrate myself,3 that they also qmay be sanctified4 in truth.
