Psalm 50

God Himself Is Judge

A Psalm of nAsaph.

oThe Mighty One, God the Lord,

speaks and summons the earth

pfrom the rising of the sun to its setting.

Out of Zion, qthe perfection of beauty,

rGod shines forth.

Our God comes; he sdoes not keep silence;1

before him is a devouring tfire,

around him a mighty tempest.

uHe calls to the heavens above

and to the earth, that he may judge his people:

Gather to me my faithful ones,

who made va covenant with me by sacrifice!

wThe heavens declare his righteousness,

for xGod himself is judge! Selah

yHear, O my people, and I will speak;

O Israel, I will testify against you.

zI am God, your God.

Not for your sacrifices ado I rebuke you;

your burnt offerings are continually before me.

I will not accept a bull from your house

or goats from your folds.

10  For every beast of the forest is mine,

the cattle on a thousand hills.

11  bI know all the birds of the hills,

and all that moves in the field is mine.

12  If I were hungry, I would not tell you,

cfor the world and its fullness are mine.

13  Do I eat the flesh of bulls

or drink the blood of goats?

14  dOffer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,2

and eperform your vows to the Most High,

15  and fcall upon me in the day of trouble;

I will gdeliver you, and you shall hglorify me.

16  But to the wicked God says:

What right have you to recite my statutes

or take my covenant on your lips?

17  iFor you hate discipline,

jand you cast my words behind you.

18  If you see a thief, kyou are pleased with him,

land you keep company with adulterers.

19  You give your mouth free rein for evil,

mand your tongue frames deceit.

20  You sit and speak against your brother;

you slander your own mother’s son.

21  These things you have done, and I nhave been silent;

you thought that I3 was one like yourself.

But now I orebuke you and play the charge before you.

22  Mark this, then, you who qforget God,

lest I tear you apart, and there be rnone to deliver!

23  The one who soffers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;

to one who torders his way rightly

I will show the usalvation of God!

Isaiah 2:10–22

10  cEnter into the rock

and hide in the dust

dfrom before the terror of the Lord,

and from the splendor of his majesty.

11  eThe haughty looks of man shall be brought low,

and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled,

and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

12  fFor the Lord of hosts has a day

against all that is proud and lofty,

against all that is lifted upand it shall be brought low;

13  against all the gcedars of Lebanon,

lofty and lifted up;

and against all the hoaks of Bashan;

14  against all ithe lofty mountains,

and against all the uplifted hills;

15  against every high tower,

and against every fortified wall;

16  against all jthe ships of Tarshish,

and against all the beautiful craft.

17  kAnd the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,

and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low,

and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

18  lAnd the idols shall utterly pass away.

19  mAnd people shall enter the caves of the rocks

and the holes of the ground,1

from before the terror of the Lord,

and from the splendor of his majesty,

nwhen he rises to terrify the earth.

20  In that day omankind will cast away

their idols of silver and their idols of gold,

which they made for themselves to worship,

to the moles and to the pbats,

21  mto enter the caverns of the rocks

and the clefts of the cliffs,

from before the terror of the Lord,

and from the splendor of his majesty,

nwhen he rises to terrify the earth.

22  qStop regarding man

rin whose nostrils is breath,

for of what account is he?

1 Thessalonians 5

The Day of the Lord

Now concerning wthe times and the seasons, brothers,1 xyou have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that ythe day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, There is peace and security, then zsudden destruction will come upon them aas labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you bare not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all cchildren2 of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then dlet us not sleep, as others do, but let us ekeep awake and fbe sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, gare drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, hhaving put on the breastplate of ifaith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for jwrath, but kto obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 lwho died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Final Instructions and Benediction

12 We ask you, brothers, mto respect those who labor among you and nare over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. oBe at peace among yourselves. 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish pthe idle,3 qencourage the fainthearted, rhelp the weak, sbe patient with them all. 15 See that tno one repays anyone evil for evil, but always useek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 vRejoice always, 17 wpray without ceasing, 18 xgive thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 yDo not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise zprophecies, 21 but atest everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

23 Now may bthe God of peace himself csanctify you completely, and may your dwhole espirit and soul and body be kept blameless at fthe coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 gHe who calls you is faithful; hhe will surely do it.

25 iBrothers, pray for us.

26 jGreet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

27 I put you under oath before the Lord to have kthis letter read to all the brothers.

28 lThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
